Portekiz’in son sirk fili Julie’nin Pangea Elephant Sanctuary’ye ulaşması ve aynı şekilde hayvanat bahçesinde tutulan fillerin koruma merkezlerine alınması esaret altındaki filler için yeni bir dönemin mümkün olduğunu gösterdi. Born Free Foundation’ın 2 Temmuz tarihli duyurusuna göre Julie, Portekiz’de bir sirkte kalan son vahşi hayvandı ve Pangea’da yaşayacak. 

Pangea fil rehabilitasyon merkezi 2026 yılında açıldı,  fillerin türdeşleri arasında rehabilite edilmesini ve korunmalarını amaçlıyor. Halkın girişine kapalı olarak hizmet veriyor. Julie’nin ilerleyen aylarda Belçika’daki bir hayvanat bahçesinde yalnız yaşayan Kariba ile bir araya gelmesi bekleniyor.

Bu gelişme, Türkiye’de Gaziantep Hayvanat Bahçesi’nde yalnız yaşayan Asya fili Gabi için de önemli bir emsal oluşturuyor. 

Gabi, 21 yıldır esaret altında, bu değişebilir

Gabi 2005 yılında Jerusalem Biblical Hayvanat Bahçesi’nde, bugünkü adıyla The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens ‘da yapay döllenme yoluyla dünyaya geldi. 2010 yılında İsrail’den Gaziantep Hayvanat Bahçesi’ne getirildi. 

Gabi annesinden ayrılıp Türkiye’ye Gaziantep Hayvanat Bahçesi’ne gönderildiğinden beri yoksunluk içinde bir hayat sürüyor üstelik Gabi’nin yanında yaşayan diğer filin 2023 yılında ölmesinin ardından Gabi tamamen yalnız kaldı.

Grup halinde yaşayan filler yanlarında sadece bir bireyin olduğu, bir tane bile ağacın olmadığı, beslenmesinin yeterli ve olması gerektiği şekilde yapılmadığı, uzun yürüme ihtiyacını karşılayamadığı bir düzenin içerisinde elbette yoksunluk çeker ve stereotip hareketler yapmaya başlar. 

Bu nedenle Gabi’nin geleceği için sadece Gaziantep Hayvanat Bahçesi’ne değil, Gabi’nin doğduğu ve yaşamının ilk yıllarını geçirdiği kuruma da etik bir sorumluluk düşüyor. Jerusalem Biblical Zoo’nun ve kurumla adı özdeşleşen Tisch ailesinin, Gabi’nin türüne uygun bir koruma merkezine yerleştirilmesi sürecinde kolaylaştırıcı, destekleyici ve şeffaf bir rol üstlenmesi gerekir.

We Can Send Gabi to Pangea!

The arrival of Portugal’s last circus elephant, Julie, at Pangea Elephant Sanctuary, together with efforts to relocate elephants kept in zoos to sanctuaries, shows that a new era is possible for elephants living in captivity. According to an announcement published by the Born Free Foundation on 2 July, Julie was the last wild animal remaining in a circus in Portugal, and she will now live at Pangea.

Pangea Elephant Sanctuary opened in 2026 and aims to rehabilitate and protect elephants in the company of members of their own species. It is closed to the public. In the coming months, Julie is expected to be joined by Kariba, who is currently living alone in a zoo in Belgium.

This development also sets an important precedent for Gabi, the Asian elephant living alone at Gaziantep Zoo in Türkiye.

Gabi Has Lived in Captivity for 21 Years. This Can Change.

Gabi was born in 2005 through artificial insemination at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, now known as The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens. In 2010, she was transferred from Israel to Gaziantep Zoo.

Since being separated from her mother and sent to Gaziantep Zoo in Türkiye, Gabi has lived a life marked by deprivation. After the death of the other elephant who lived beside her in 2023, Gabi was left completely alone.

Elephants are social animals who live in groups. In an environment where there is only one other individual beside them, not a single tree, inadequate and inappropriate feeding, and no opportunity to fulfil their need to walk long distances, elephants inevitably experience deprivation and begin to display stereotypic behaviours.

For this reason, the ethical responsibility for Gabi’s future does not rest solely with Gaziantep Zoo. It also lies with the institution where she was born and spent the first years of her life. The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo and the Tisch family, whose name has become closely associated with the institution, should play a facilitating, supportive and transparent role in the process of relocating Gabi to a sanctuary appropriate for her species.
